Here's what is happening in the markets today, Monday, May 17th.

Stocks are pointing to a lower opening after we had the worst week since February last week.

Bitcoin is in a slump and Elon Musk is making things worse for the cryptocurrency. He implied on Twitter yesterday that maybe Tesla will sell off (or has already sold) its entire bitcoin holdings. Last week he said that Tesla would no longer be accepting bitcoin as payment because of his concerns about the amount of energy used in mining coins.

The price of bitcoin hit its lowest point since February. Bitcoin (BTC-USD) is down 8% to about $45,000, but it's off its lows today of just below $43,000. Ethereum (ETH-USD) is off 9% to around $3,500, with earlier lows nearing $3,100. Dogecoin (DOGE-USD) is down 5.5% to about $0.59, having hit $0.45 earlier.

Today is Tax Day for most of the US. For Texas, it’s June 15th.

Earnings: Retail companies, it's your time to shine. Target (TGT), Walmart (WMT), Macy's (M), Home Depot (HD), and Lowe's (LOW)  all report earnings this week. Expect to hear about the effects of the $1,400 stimulus checks and updates on mask guidance.

63% of people who bought a home in the US last year made an offer without seeing the property, according to a survey by Redfin.

No more masks: Last week, Trader Joe's, Walmart (WMT), Sam's Club and Costco (COST) announced that they don’t require masks in stores anymore. Today, we heard that Starbucks (SBUX), Publix (KR) and Walt Disney World (DIS) are the latest companies to change their masking policies.

Coronavirus: The one-week average of new cases in the US hit its lowest level since June. Meanwhile, the Canadian government has started to discuss reopening the border with the US, which has been closed since March 2020.
